Carl Gustav Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist andfounder of the school of analytical psychology. Heproposed and demonstrable the concepts of theextroverted and introverted personality,archetypes, and the collective unconscious. Theissues that he dealt with arose from his personalexperiences. For many years Jung felt as if he hadtwo separate personalities. One introverted fleckthe other was extroverted. This interplay results inhis study of integration and wholeness. His counterfeithas been influential not only in psychology, but inreligion and literature as well. Jung was natural onJuly 26, 1875 in Kesswil, Switzerland, the onlyson of a Protestant clergyman. At the age of fourhis family moved to Basel. His childhood was alonely one. Jung observed his parents and teachersand tested to understand their behavior, especiallythat of his father. The elder Jung had a failing beliefin religion. Jung could never understand why.There were numerous relatives on either side of hisfamily that we re clergymen. It was anticipate ofJung to continue in the family tradition. Jung didnot decide to follow, instead choosing to attendthe University of Basel from 1895-1900. Beforedeciding on medicine Jung studied biology,zoology, paleontology, and archaeology. Hisexplorations did not stop with that, he looked atphilosophy, mythology, early Christian literature aswell as religion. His interest in religion could beattributed to his heritage and watching the demiseof his father. After release Basel, Jung became anassistant physician at Burgholzli Psychiatric clinicunder Eugen Bleuler. In 1902 he obtained hisM.D. from the University of Zurich. Hisdissertation was entitled "On the Psychology andPathology of So -Called Occult Phenomena".Through this work one of his basic concepts isoutlined, the underlying wholeness of the psyche.Jungs first research was conducted in 1904. Hestudied word association in patients. He foundgroups of suppress psychic content for which heinvented the now famous word "complex." Thisstudy brought him close to the work of SigmundFreud. Jungs work confirmed many of Freudsideas. Between 1907 and 1912 he and Freudworked really close. Many believed that Jungwould continue Freuds psychoanalysis, but thisdid not occur.
